Spotting Lottery Scams
Lotteries can create a real buzz. Hearing or
reading about multi-million dollar jackpots, well, it gets a lot of people very
excited. And there are many people whose lives have been changed by winning one
of these lotteries we read or hear about in newspapers, on the internet, the
radio and on TV. For every one person who wins a lottery jackpot, there
are literally millions of people who don’t win but that doesn’t stop us
celebrating and associating with those lucky few.
Is it a problem to associate with winners and is
it easy to recognize the potential, however small, of winning ourselves? For
most people, playing the lottery is fine; it can even be a sound investment when
managed properly. But there are also a number of circumstances in which playing
lotteries can be very destructive.
First, there are some people who simply should not
spend money in this way. Gamblers can go from having everything to having
nothing with something as simple and seemingly harmless as a regular interest in
their local lottery. Anyone who approaches lotteries as a gambler, and a gambler
first and foremost, risks serious consequences.
Second, many lotteries out there are scams; it is
important to be very discriminating in the type of lotteries you play and
exactly how you play them. For instance, many people are contacted to
participate in lottery via the telephone, email, or letter, despite the fact
that it has been declared illegal to introduce foreign lotteries in UK. These
are the type of situations you have to watch out for.
The people behind these scams are very difficult
to track down but the scams themselves are easy to spot if you know what to look
for. First of all, scam lotteries typically provide a very short time limit to
claim the prizes or winnings. People are advised to send a small amount of money
(generally described as an administrative fee) in order to claim their winnings.
The money that is asked for generally has to be transferred to another country
via money transfer. To the surprise of many people, they will have to give their
account details.
There are even a few instances in which people masquerading as representatives
of lotteries set out to blackmail winners and asked them to transfer more and
more money. In one of these cases, a doctor ended up sending £93,000 after being
blackmailed by the lottery owners. The people behind these fake lotteries
eventually threaten their victims that if they stop sending the money requested,
all the money they have already transferred will be lost.
Of course, there are plenty of perfectly reputable
lotteries out there; the ones that have the backing of national, state, and
sometimes local governments, for one. You can find out more about how to improve
